Anxiety as Energy: Understanding the Message & Finding Calm

August 22, 20254 min read

Anxiety is something many of us know far too well. It isn’t just in the mind—it weaves its way through the body, the emotions, and even the soul. It can come as a racing heart, a tight chest, a buzzing energy under the skin, or a flood of thoughts that won’t quiet down. Sometimes it builds slowly, sometimes it crashes in suddenly as a full-blown anxiety attack.

But here’s what I want you to know: anxiety isn’t here to destroy you. It’s here to deliver a message.

Anxiety as Energy

When anxiety shows up, it’s often because our energy has become ungrounded. We may be holding onto too much—too many thoughts, too much pressure, too many responsibilities. Sensitive souls in particular tend to absorb energy from others, so sometimes the anxiety isn’t even ours. It’s a buildup, like static electricity waiting for release.

The body feels this excess energy and reacts. Muscles tighten. The breath becomes shallow. The nervous system floods the body with stress signals. It feels overwhelming, but really—it’s energy looking for a way to flow again.

Anxiety as a Messenger

If you can soften into the moment—just enough to listen—you might notice that anxiety carries a message. It might be saying:

Slow down, you’re pushing too hard.

Something in your environment feels unsafe—pay attention.

Your truth is being swallowed when it needs to be spoken.

Your body is exhausted and needs rest.

Instead of seeing anxiety as an enemy, we can begin to view it as a guide. It’s a sensitive alarm system that doesn’t always get the details right, but it always wants to keep you safe.

Supporting Yourself in the Moment

When anxiety rises, the first step is not to fight it but to meet it with compassion. Here are a few practices you can call on when the waves come:

1. Anchor the Breath

Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 4. Hold for 2. Then exhale through the mouth for 6. Keep repeating until your body begins to soften. This signals to your nervous system that it is safe to come out of fight-or-flight.

2. Ground the Energy

Visualise roots growing from your feet deep into the earth. With every exhale, imagine excess energy draining down through those roots, returning to the soil where it is transmuted into peace. This not only calms the body but also clears energy that isn’t yours.

3. Soothe the Body

Press your palms together firmly. Rub your arms gently, as if hugging yourself. Sip water. These small physical acts bring comfort and remind the body that you are safe in the present moment.

4. Reframe the Message

Once the body is steadier, ask: What is this anxiety trying to tell me?

• Do I need to rest?

• Do I need to set a boundary?

• Do I need to ground and return to myself?

This simple question transforms anxiety from a frightening experience into a conversation with your soul.

When an Anxiety Attack Hits

Anxiety attacks can feel terrifying. Your chest tightens, your heart races, and it may feel like you’re losing control. In those moments, remember: a panic attack is a wave—it will always pass.

• Repeat softly to yourself: This is temporary. I am safe. This will pass.

• Name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This grounds you in the present moment.

• If you have a crystal like amethyst or rose quartz, hold it in your hand and let its coolness anchor you.

Soul Perspective

Here’s something important: anxiety doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you’re sensitive. It means you feel deeply. The very qualities that sometimes make anxiety flare—empathy, intuition, awareness—are also your greatest gifts.

In fact, those who are energetically sensitive often carry a deeper purpose. Your system is finely tuned, so yes, it may overwhelm at times—but that same tuning allows you to receive guidance from Spirit, to feel love intensely, and to connect with others on a soul level.

When you meet your anxiety with compassion, you transform it. Instead of fearing it, you can learn from it. Instead of running from it, you can release it. Every time you breathe through the storm, you reclaim more of your power.

Inspiration for the Journey

Next time you feel anxiety stirring, try whispering these reminders to yourself:

This is energy, not truth.

I am not my anxiety. I am the calm beneath it.

I choose to return to my breath, my body, my soul.

I am safe. I am loved. I am held.

You don’t have to fight anxiety. You can flow with it, listen to it, and let it guide you back into alignment.

The truth is: you are stronger than you think, softer than you realise, and more resilient than anxiety wants you to believe.

You are the steady ground beneath the storm.

You are the light that never goes out.
