For all our latest updates, business fun and stories...
Ah, social media. The magical realm where small business owners are expected to be part marketing guru, part professional photographer, and part circus performer—all while trying to maintain a sense of authenticity. If you’re like me, an introvert who would rather curl up with a good book than showcase your face on camera, the demands of social media can feel overwhelming. But fear not, my fellow introverts! Let’s unpack this in a way that doesn’t require an acting degree or a bold personality.
It seems like every scroll through Instagram reveals someone confidently holding a latte and smiling like they’ve just won the lottery. Meanwhile, you’re wondering if it’s socially acceptable to post a picture of your dog instead. Spoiler alert: it totally is! Social media can create a pressure cooker environment where you feel the need to perform, but let’s be honest: not all of us are cut out for a starring role in the latest viral trend.
Instead of relying on those picture-perfect moments, lean into storytelling. Share your journey—the ups, the downs, and the absolutely bewildering moments that make running a small business feel like a rollercoaster ride. People connect with real stories, not just curated images. Plus, it gives you a chance to express yourself without feeling like you need to smile while standing next to a branded backdrop.
If being in front of the camera makes you feel like you’re about to give a TED Talk while standing in front of an audience of thousands, consider focusing on your writing instead. Craft engaging posts that resonate with your audience. Use your unique voice (that’s the one you’ve been honing through all those cosy conversations!) to communicate your message. Remember, a well-written post can be just as impactful—if not more—than a perfectly posed photo.
Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of daily posts? Batch your content! Set aside some time each week to create several posts at once. This way, you won’t feel the pressure to come up with something new every day. Plus, it gives you a chance to dip into your creative well when you’re feeling inspired, rather than scrambling for ideas at the last minute. Think of it as a mini creative retreat, minus the need to wear pants.
Engagement is key, but it doesn’t have to mean endless scrolling through feeds. Find groups or communities of like-minded small business owners—especially those who share your introverted tendencies. Connect, collaborate, and support one another. You’ll discover that many people share your struggle with social media, and together, you can navigate this wild frontier in a way that feels comfortable and authentic.
If being in front of the camera feels like torture, consider using visuals that don’t require your presence. Flat lays of your products, nature shots that inspire you, or even snippets of your workspace can be just as captivating. The world is full of beautiful visuals that speak for themselves. And let’s face it, your dog is a way better model than you! My Rosie is definitely!
Many introverted small business owners are navigating the same challenges you are. It’s perfectly okay to take a step back and create a social media strategy that aligns with your personality and comfort level. Be kind to yourself—after all, you’re building something wonderful, and that’s worth celebrating, even if it’s from the comfort of your cosy nook. I plan 12 months of topics and dedicate upto two full working days to plan, create and schedule my social media, blogs and newsletters!
In the end, social media doesn’t have to feel like a chore or an overwhelming demand. By embracing your unique strengths, focusing on storytelling, and finding a balance that works for you, you can turn this digital landscape into a supportive and enriching space. So go ahead—post that picture of your dog. Who knows? It might just be the most relatable thing your followers see all day!
